President's Message

NPA Presidents Message-- May 2014

Things are really starting to slow down here in Naples. Traffic has been much more manageable during the day. We went out to eat the other night and didn't need reservations. We also had our first Thunderstorm of the wet season on May 14th. Over the next month, the frequency of storms will increase until it's raining almost every day. By August we'll be watching out for Hurricanes. Officially, hurricane season starts on June 1st but the storms usually come later in the summer and into fall. Now is a good time to organize a plan, buy extra supplies and call your insurance company to brush up on your policy. Proper planning prevents poor performance. Say that ten times fast!

April Speaker
Last month, Mike Franz spoke to us about fatique and it's affect on your performance. This can be a very tiring subject... pun intended. Most of us have flown when we're tired, but that doesn't mean it's OK or should be accepted. Many of us take for granted that you will fly when tired from time to time. The stories and experience shared at the meeting really made me think about my approach to determining if I am ready to fly. Thank you Mike for presenting this subject in such a thought provoking way.

May's Speaker
This month Duane Parker will be presenting an FAA Safety Seminar on iPads in the cockpit. How do you make the best use of your iPad? There are so many apps and features, it's easy to feel lost when making choices about the best way to use your iPad. Duane will talk about Apps, ADSB, Preflight briefing etc. Don't miss this program.

Website
I have begun work on updating our website. We will soon have the capability to accept payments for membership online. So please excuse our dust as we slowly make updates on the website. The new system will make our volunteers work even easier. The goal is to improve communications with members. So don't be surprised if you find broken links and a changing layout over the next few months. Take a look at the website. It's rudimentary now, but will have improved graphics and features as time goes on.

Monthly Pancake Breakfast
Chapter 1067 of the Experimental Aircraft Association holds a monthly pancake breakfast at the Pilot's Lounge on the 2nd Sunday of each month from 8am-11am. It's a lot of fun and a great deal for breakfast, only $5. Stop on by. Non-Members of EAA are welcome.
If you are interested in displaying your aircraft, please call Dave at the Airport Pilot Shop.

Volunteers
An organization like the Naples Pilots Association can't run itself. It needs capable people to help carry out small tasks to make our meetings work. This teamwork is essential. We are currently looking for a couple people to help with these four tasks. I promise the workload is very low and it's a great way to get involved and meet other members.

Trade-Ins Needed
If you have any used headsets or portable GPS units laying around collecting dust, please see Dave at the Airport Pilot Shop. He may be able to help find a new home for your old equipment.

Naples Airport News:
Most exciting news!...
The Naples Airport Authority is celebrating its 45th Anniversary and is planning a public celebration on July 4th. The current plan is to hold it at the Commercial Terminal following the City’s 4th of July Parade. There will be refreshments and the Military Museum will have their displays set up. Check with the airport authority to confirm details as time gets closer.

More good news for GA...
In March we reported that GA activity is up overall from last year. Hangar occupancy also reflects increased activity. Hangar use is almost to capacity and a waiting list is next on the checklist. This is especially unusual given that the usual high season activity is winding down. If you're in need, call Pam (239-643-0404). She does still have shade hangars and will ask how many you want!

Noise Abatement meeting report...
At the April meeting, the board formally adopted a plan to address noise abatement. Some points on the list include pilots using full length for take-off, respecting the voluntary curfew for operations, and adhering to noise abatement procedures. It was reported by tower officials in attendance that most aircraft readily use full length as a matter of safety. Representatives from nearby homes associations also gave their list of complaints at the meeting, most notable of which was the complaint of activity that continues beyond the voluntary curfew.

The next Noise Compatibility Committee Meeting will be Thursday, June 26th, 9 a.m. in the Airport Office Building Conference Room located at 200 Aviation Drive North, 2nd floor. This room is located above the pilot shop.
There is another meeting tentatively scheduled for August 28th, same time and place. It will be confirmed at the June meeting.

Final report on fire inspection of hangars
The City of Naples Fire inspector completed a walk through inspection of all Naples Airport Authority owned hangars and buildings. Twenty seven addresses were inspected, that translates to over two hundred tenants’ hangars, storage, and office spaces. Eleven spaces had minor violations with extension cords, three had carpeting under their aircraft, one had blocked a fire extinguisher, one had a fan left running, and one had some oily rags stored improperly. Notices will be sent to the renters to make the corrections.

Airport upkeep and maintenance...
The work on the canopy covered walkway from GA terminal to parking mentioned last month is in progress. The old canopy has been removed and the structure is being painted. Once painting is complete, the new structure will be installed. The entire project should be completed by early June.
The work on the executive hangar next to the pilot lounge is still on hold until permits are received.

The Airport Office Building Roof (Pilot Shop Building) is scheduled for replacement. Bids for the job were advertised on May 4, 2014. The work will include replacement of the AOB roof, the walkway roof, and the entry gazebo roof. The final bids are due June 3, 2014.
The existing roof is original to the building which was completed in 1994.

There were questions from tenants about the runway 14-32 closures. For those of you who did not know, this was due to the location of a 120 foot crane in place to install piling for the Gordon River Greenway footbridge off the approach end of runway 14. The contractor completed the work as of May13th.

Hurricane Season Prep
Yes it's time to think about preparing for a possible hurricane. The season goes from June 1st to November 30th. No matter what the forecast, best to be prepared. Small price to pay for living in Paradise.
The NAA suggests several things as reminders...
Hangars are not wind rated for any specific category storm. Tenants should make ample plans to evacuate (2 alternate airports, contact FBO's, etc.) at least 48 hours prior to storm force winds. In addition, should there be a strong storm, the NAA staff and airport may be unavailable for several days following. Please allow time for staff to return, storm damage repair, and airport to reopen.
Collier county publishes an 'All Hazards Guide' that can be obtained at local libraries.
More information can be obtained by reading the full text of this summary on pilot association website, Including recommended items for emergency supply kit.

Great Places to Fly to! by Dennis Didonna
So you have this great expensive hobby of flying light airplanes, your spouse says wow, that was pretty high fuel bill last month! Well the reason may be the other half never really enjoys the freedom of aviation like you do. So let me give you some suggestions of great places to go within an hour flight of Naples that are great places to eat, I'll give you five this time and five more in the next article.

KLAL about an hour away, easy in and out, pull right up to the terminal on the NE side of the field. On the second floor you'll find Earhart's Runway Grill. Sunday is a real treat with a Prime Rib Breakfast for 8.95 8 to 11 am and a fantastic Prime Rib brunch for 14.95 served from 11:15 to 2:15 you can't beat this place for the food and aviation memorability. Wow they have a great hotel just across the street as well, this makes for a great forgive me weekend.

X25, Chalet Suzanne airstrip, hotel and four star Resturant. With a 2300' lighted airstrip, you park, bring your own tie downs, pull your bags out and check in to this old Florida bed and breakfast, I suggest you stay the nite and enjoy the dinner, but if you are just out for a weekend breakfast this place should not be missed. The rooms are newly renovated and the Resturant has been voted best country inns by Florida monthly. If your have lack of attention problems in you aviation marriage this place will solve all of them, this is a great country retreat.

KVNC, Venice Florida great Resturant cafe on the field, good breakfast and lunch, easy in and out. Another Florida favorite is Starkey's on the beach, great for lunch and dinner, they say they will pick you at the airport for free, I've never tried it however, I've always had a ride. This is a great flight all along the beaches from Naples to Venice, you got to love it.

KOBE, Okeechobee airport, country breakfast for like 3.95, great friendly service and you can sit outside on the covered patio and watch the airplanes come and go. This is a Sunday favorite for pilots all over the state so be prepared to fight for a table. They are open 7 days a week for breakfast and lunch, so you have no excuse not to enjoy this local airport cafe.

KPMP, Pompano air park. Wow Galuppi's Resturant is a great place for everything you can imagine, weddings to Bar Mitzvahs. Tie down at Sheltair, walk over or they will take you but the walk to Galuppi's on the Green is easy. Sit outside on a covered patio overlooking the golf course green, they are open 7 days a week from 7 am to 1am with a fantastic Sunday brunch 10am to 2 pm. Make sure you sit on the patio. You might want to make a reservation for Galuppi's at 844-250-8161. This should be you promise to yourself for this year, I'm not going to miss this place!

I've got more great places for you to enjoy the next time we talk. Airport cafés from St Augustine to Marathon, easy enjoyable Florida flying dinning for you to investigate and enjoy. See you in the fall Dennis & M'Liss. ;)

Many tenants bring their ‘furkids’ to the airport with them when they have things to do in the hangar, or are getting the aircraft ready for a flight. The dogs are typically able to run around near the hangar. This is a very serious safety hazard, not only for anyone driving on the ramp, but also for the dogs. All dogs are required to be leashed when on the airfield to avoid any potential problems

Favorite Places to Go
I know everyone has a favorite place to fly-out for breakfast or lunch. Why keep it such a secret? Please share your favorite places to go, so that I can build a library of fly-out ideas. I will share all of the ideas on our www.NaplesPilots.com website. Something that may seem routine to you may be a completely new experience for someone else. Where have you flown lately?
